Mongrel Mob man sent to jail

Mahu Wairau, 42, had earlier admitted the January 21 burglary of Lorneville Superliquor and the January 22 burglary of Southern Fish Supply.
He had also admitted unlawfully possessing a sawn-off shotgun, threatening to kill, resisting police, driving while disqualified and refusing to permit a blood specimen to be taken at Invercargill on January 22, and driving while disqualified at Hastings on January 12.
Judge Kevin Phillips said Wairua had a long list of previous convictions, including 19 previous convictions for driving while disqualified, eight previous convictions for burglary and five firearms convictions.
Judge Phillips said he was pleased Wairau considered that at the age of 42 he could break the cycle of offending.
%26quot;Your involvement as a mobster in the Mongrel Mob is not going to get better, its going to get worse,%26quot; Judge Phillips said.
He sentenced Wairau to a total of four and a half years in prison, with a non-parole period of two years and three months.
He was disqualified from driving for 18 months and an indefinite disqualification would stand.
Assault Shane James Simpson, 26, printer, was yesterday convicted and fined on driving and cannabis charges. In a reserved decision, Judge Phillips convicted Simpson in the Invercargill District Court on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs or both to the extent of having improper control of his vehicle.
The charge related to a car crash at the intersection of Tay and Dee streets, Invercargill, on June 24, last year.
Simpson was also convicted of dangerous driving but not on offensive weapon charges. Hewas fined a total of of $850 and ordered to pay reparation of $825.
