Its too late and the clubs that stage most of the group races at night %26mdash; Auckland and New Zealand Metropolitan (Christchurch) %26mdash; should go back to holding them between 8pm and 9pm.
Fridays New Zealand Derby at Addington was scheduled for 10.25pm. It probably forced some older people to stay up later than usual to watch television coverage. Older people might not be big punters but plenty of them enjoy betting on top horses in group races.
There was considerable interest in Fridays Derby with superstar Auckland Reactor seeking his 10th win from as many starts. His army of supporters were treated to another effortless win.
Clubs have increased crowd sizes and interest in harness racing this season. However, the Auckland and NZ Metropolitan clubs would get more accolades if they held group races no later than 9pm.
Other major races that started late in the past year included the Dominion Handicap (10.19pm), NZ Messenger Championship (10.04pm) and Rowe Cup (9.34pm).
