Reason for teaching: I decided to become a teacher during my second year in college. I was teaching for volunteer hours for college credit. I learned during this time that there is an urgent need for teachers throughout the state and country. Greatest moment as a teacher: One of the greatest moments in my career was to be nominated in the 2006-07 school year for teacher of the year. I did not win, but I was honored to be on the ballot. Most embarrassing moment: The most embarrassing moment in my career was during my first few years of teaching. Every time I would be observed by administrators, I would get very nervous and perspire continuously. One administrator even made a humorous remark about my sweating every time they came in. However, I have had all great observations, even during my first few years. Least favorite part of teaching: My least favorite part of teaching would have to be similar to most teachers — the hidden workload that we all endure. It is everything except teaching. It is the grading, planning, meetings, paperwork and e-mails. It feels like 50 percent of the work involved for any teaching position is not actually instructional time. Who do you admire most and why? I admire the good qualities of everyone from children to adults. I like it when people know what they want and go for it. I also admire the way some people can give more than they take, and people with a lot of patience. They inspire me to become a better person. Favorite movies: My favorite movies would be from the ’90s: The Waterboy with Adam Sandler and Forrest Gump with Tom Hanks. I like classical-style inspirational movies. Last book you read: The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. Hobbies: Playing sports, fishing, watching college football. If you weren’t a teacher, what career would you choose and why? Actually, another career I had given thought to before teaching was becoming a doctor. I have been thinking about pursuing it after my own children are grown up. Then I would have ample time needed to become a doctor. Like when I decided to become a teacher, I would become a doctor because we need doctors more than teachers. I am willing to help society where it is needed the most. Joseph Harrod was nominated by Connie Conway. Volusia public- and private-school teachers will be profiled throughout the year.
