Reason for teaching: I was initially inspired by my aunt, Suzanne Isbell Bentsen, who taught elementary school for many years and became an administrator. My favorite college professor, adviser and friend Sallie Boggs, also inspired me greatly in Columbia, S.C. I have also always loved being around children and helping others. Greatest moment as a teacher: Daily there are great little moments as a teacher, such as when you can see “the light bulb go on” when a student finally understands something or remembers something you have taught them before. I had one student in particular that was unable to talk in words or phrases. He made noises and pointed to things and would try to say the first letter of people’s names or signs that he saw. I’ll never forget the time we discovered what “wawoo” was. Of course, our first guess was water, but that wasn’t it. Instead, we were on a field trip and in the school bus, when he looked out the window as we drove by Wal-Mart and he said very excitedly, “Wawoo! Wawoo!” One of the most honorable moments I have had as a teacher was being nominated by my peers as teacher of the year at Louise S. McInnis Elementary School in 2004. Most embarrassing moment: One time I had spent several hours creating a classroom bulletin board, and just as I was finishing one of my colleagues passed through my room and told me that I had misspelled a word. Least favorite part of teaching: Grading and paperwork. I don’t want to sound like a “negative-Nelly,” but those things are coupled with the fact that our time is so limited to accomplish all those tasks, and then we are so poorly compensated. Person you admire most and why: I admire my husband, my daughter and my Mom and Dad, each for individual reasons. I also admire all of my fellow teachers, assistants and school personnel that help keep our students and schools flourishing every day. And last, but certainly not least, I admire all of our U.S. soldiers that have served and continue to serve our country every day. Favorite movies: Grease, Mr. Holland’s Opus, Secondhand Lions and The Astronaut Farmer Last book you read: Louder Than Words by Jenny McCarthy Hobbies: Reading, playing board games, making crafts, spending time with family If you weren’t a teacher, what career would you choose and why? I would probably be in another service field, or working for a charity or nonprofit organization. When I worked in the retail field years ago, I enjoyed visual merchandising as well. Was there a special teacher you remember? My father was in the military when I was growing up, so I moved quite often. It is so hard to remember them all, but I can remember that I loved my sixth-grade teacher, Mrs. Hamaker, in Chapel Hill, N.C., because she taught us to laugh and learn. Mr. Stephanopolous in Springfield, Va., made sense of seventh-grade algebra for me. My 10th-grade literature teacher, Mr. Carver, also in Springfield, Va., taught me how to appreciate Shakespeare. Sarah Fogle was nominated by colleague Lori Rosekelly. Volusia public and private school teachers will be profiled throughout the year.
