Age: 33 Reason for becoming a teacher: In high school I realized I loved learning and thought being a teacher was one way for me to stay in school for the rest of my life. Oh, and I saw the movies Dangerous Minds, Dead Poet’s Society, To Sir With Love and Stand and Deliver. I figured teaching had to be as rewarding as those movies promised. Sarcasm aside, I honestly do find it rewarding. Greatest moment as a teacher: Hands down, my best moment in my career was when I introduced the graduating class of 2006 and congratulated every senior that walked the stage. Many of those students I taught in eighth and ninth grade. Favorite aspects of being a teacher: The clich%26#65533; answer of my students aside, I enjoy the creativity and problem solving involved in teaching. There have been times when I’m working with a student on a concept, day after day and in the back of my mind, I think, “This kid isn’t getting it,” but I have to find a way for them to “get it.” Least favorite part of teaching: Well, I’m going to offer another clich%26#65533; answer for this one as well, but I find outside attitudes about teachers the worst part of this job. One of the insinuations made by high-stakes testing, FCAT, is I don’t know what I’m doing. It doesn’t trust that I am able to identify my students’ educational needs and develop a course of action to help them Favorite movies: Harold and Maude, The Color Purple, Donnie Darko and Fight Club. Last book you read: Life of Pi by Yann Martel. Favorite hobbies: Racquetball, gaming and randomly roaming Florida’s back roads for mom-and-pop joints. If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be and why? Something related to exploring the human condition. Person you most admire: Joseph Campbell, the dude who went around the world collecting folk tales from geographically isolated areas and recognized a set of base-line stories that all these different cultures shared. His work offers reassurance that humanity really is more alike. His work also illuminates the power of storytelling.
