Teacher of the Week | Keri Stewart

Age: 43. Reason for becoming a teacher: It’s all I ever wanted to be since fifth grade. Now, it’s my passion for teenagers and for my subject area. It’s me wanting to influence kids — the next generation. Greatest moment as a teacher: When you get to connect with a student beyond the classroom. When a student comes back to tell you that they are successful and that it is attributed to what you did for them as a teacher. Most embarrassing moment as a teacher: The day I fainted in front of the class. I cannot explain why this happened to this day. I remember starting an activity with the overhead projector, and waking up to security trying to revive me. Favorite aspects of being a teacher: The best part of what I do is having the opportunity to work with teenagers. Least favorite part of teaching: The extra paperwork that goes along with the job and the demand of my time. Favorite movies: Footloose, Dangerous Minds and Facing the Giants. Last book you read: Together Is All We Need by Michael Phillips. Favorite hobbies: Civil War re-enacting and reading. Family: Parents, Jim and Moni Stewart; brothers, Jim, Lance and Jonathan; nephews and nieces, Sarah, Samantha, Noah, Caleb, Libby, Ryann, Tessa and Ju. If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be and why? I would be a youth counselor because this career would offer another opportunity to fulfill my passion to work with teenagers and to have a positive effect on their lives. Person you most admire and why: Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, because he was a great leader. He used his gifts to support the cause he believed in, and he was a strong Christian who applied his faith in every area of life. Full-time public and private school teachers in Seminole County are eligible for nomination. Nominators can be students or their parents, school staffers and friends, but not family members of the teacher. Information needed is the nominator’s name, phone number, the teacher’s name, school, grade they teach and a brief reason for their nomination. Nominations are limited to the first 40 received.
