Age: 39. Reason for becoming a teacher: I always enjoyed school while growing up, and I had so many wonderful teachers that I connected with. I love the energy and creativity that comes with being an early-childhood teacher. Greatest moment as a teacher: Becoming a Sallie Mae Beginning Teacher of the Year Semi-Finalist for Polk County. Most embarrassing moment as a teacher: I was helping the students on the playground get the hanging rings unwrapped, and I swung them around too hard and they hit me right between the eyes! One student said, “Mrs. Jolicoeur, should we call your mom?” Favorite aspects of being a teacher: Each year when I get a new class, I enjoy creating and planning new ideas that are of interest to them. I love sparking their interest in science and about their world. Kindergartners really do know a lot. Also, who wouldn’t love getting 18 hugs a day? Least favorite part of teaching: When you have to report to parents about their child’s struggles or misbehavior. Favorite movies: Something’s Gotta Give or anything with Diane Keaton. Last book you read: I enjoy reading books by Nicholas Sparks. Favorite hobbies: Running, biking, gardening. Family: Husband, Jeff; daughter, Justine; and son, Jake. If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be and why? A stay-at-home mother. I wish I had more energy for my own children. Person you most admire and why: My English teacher, Miss Hazel Hailey of Lakeland Senior High, was an amazing role model for every student that passed through her doors.
