Age: 53 Reason for becoming a teacher: My father was a teacher, and I had many good teachers whom I admired and respected. Greatest moment as a teacher: At the end of class when I can see my students feel good about what they have accomplished. Most embarrassing moment as a teacher: Early in my teaching career at Gateway School, I was talked into being the “weather girl” for one of the morning news shows. I was dressed for the occasion: in flippers, snorkel and goggles. The forecast, of course, was for rain. Favorite aspects of being a teacher: As an itinerant teacher, I travel to many schools, which allows me to meet and work with different teachers and staff throughout the county. Least favorite part of teaching: My job requires traveling to different schools throughout the day. The occasional panic attack while sitting in traffic, wondering whether I’ll make my next school on time, is the least favorite part of my job. Favorite movies: Out of Africa, The Color Purple Last book you read: Quiet Strength by Tony Dungy Favorite hobbies: Hiking and enjoying state parks. Family: Three sisters and a brother, Diana, Connie, Sue and Tommy. I also have three little dogs that keep me company. If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be and why? I would like to work for a mission-based organization that travels to other countries with volunteers to work on community needs and projects. Person you most admire and why: Eunice Kennedy Shriver, because through her vision and determination she worked to develop programs that enhance and improve the lives of persons with intellectual disabilities. She is the founder of the Special Olympics program. COURTESY OF CHARLOTTE DAY
