February 3rd, 2008, 4:16 pm Hobby Shops

Age: 54. Reason for becoming a teacher: When I was a little girl, I always played school with all the children in my neighborhood. Now, I get to do it for real. I love to build relationships with children and see them grow intellectually, emotionally and socially. Greatest moment as a teacher: When students seek me out to get an honest opinion and they really want my input. I also love to see them having fun while they are learning. Most embarrassing moment as a teacher: Last year while I was teaching my last class of the day, the wooden stool I was sitting on collapsed and I went crashing to the floor. It was one of the few times there was total silence in my room. Favorite aspects of being a teacher: Every day is a new day with laughs and challenges. I love being able to contribute something meaningful to a child’s growth. Sometimes I think I learn from them as much as they learn from me. Least favorite part of teaching: Seeing some students make poor decisions after being counseled otherwise. Favorite movies: Music of the Heart and Shall We Dance. Last book you read: Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell. Favorite hobbies: Gardening, reading novels and playing with my grandbaby. Family: My husband of 32 years, Bill; daughter, Lindsay; sons, Brad and John; daughters-in-law, Amy and Sarah; granddaughter, Emersyn; and grandsons, Asher and Braydon. If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be and why? I would be a Hospice volunteer because this organization was very important to our family a few years ago, and I wish I could give back. Person you most admire and why: My husband, because he conquered great obstacles while growing up and has accomplished many things in his life. He has always been a godly husband and father while setting great role models for our children. He has always believed in me and is my greatest encourager. He is my hero! Nominated by: Lois Chavis. Full-time public and private school teachers in Seminole County are eligible for nomination. Nominators can be students or their parents, school staffers and friends, but not family members of the teacher. Information needed is the nominator’s name, phone number, the teacher’s name, school, grade they teach and a brief reason for their nomination. Nominations are limited to the first 40 received.
