Age: 54 Reason for becoming a teacher: I had planned to seek employment in a hospital setting; however, upon advice from my counselor, I took an extra semester to complete a student teaching practicum in the public schools. I fell in love with the whole aspect of working with young children and their families in the school setting. Greatest moment as a teacher: I cherish the times when my young students spontaneously use verbal communication and carry over skills to home situations. When parents tell me that their child talks too much, I know that I have done my job! Most embarrassing moment as a teacher: When my language-impaired students finish my sentences for me! I guess I could consider this a sign of improvement on my students’ part and not a sign of my age! Favorite aspects of being a teacher: I enjoy the fact that each student is unique and the dynamics of each class vary from year to year. Due to these two aspects, I am challenged to be creative, open-minded and up-to-date on new research, techniques, etc., in order to meet the varying needs of the students. Each child teaches me something new. Least favorite part of teaching: Paperwork. Favorite movies: Good Will Hunting , An Affair to Remember, The Thorn Birds Last book you read: A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson Favorite hobbies: Traveling, reading and walking Family: My friend, Jose Santiago, and his extended family, along with my brother Mike and sister Patti. If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be and why? I would probably go into the nursing field because it shares many aspects of teaching: helping others, working with families and communicating face to face with a variety of people. Person you most admire and why: I admire anyone who moves beyond individual hardships, obstacles or disabilities to lead productive lives. On a personal level, I admire my parents, who taught my brother, sister and me the value of education, the love of reading and the importance of being independent and self-sufficient.
