Helping kids discover

February 21st, 2008, 7:54 pm Hobby Shops

Reason for teaching: As an avid reader, I wanted to share my love of books and learning with others. My goal is to encourage students to use their imagination and discover the world around them. Greatest moment as a teacher: I was the 2005 Teacher of the Year finalist for the Florida African-American Education Alliance. Making “nonreaders” into book lovers each year is rewarding. Most embarrassing moment: When speaking about a popular musician from my youth, Alice Cooper, the macabre rock musician, I soon realized no student in the room knew the artist. I finally accepted that I was getting older. Least favorite part of teaching: “High-stakes” testing of students. One test can change a student’s academic record. Person you admire most and why: My mother, Vinelia Booz. She raised her children to have respect for others and to work hard at everything endeavored. Favorite movies: All five Harry Potter films and The Wiz. Last book you read and who wrote it: Prayer For America by Dennis Kucinich, preface by Studs Turkel. Hobbies: Quilting, sewing, painting, origami, and reading young-adult fiction If you weren’t a teacher what other career would you choose and why: I would probably work in journalism or book editing and reviewing. Was there a special teacher that you remember? My high school teacher David Masters. He will always be remembered for believing in me and for showing me that I had the potential to do great things in life. I try to model my teaching style after his.
