Some might think that a visit to the CU Volunteer Clearing House (VCH) would result in little more than getting handed a plastic bag and a location at which to pick up litter on campus. In actuality, the organization outdoes itself in matching the personal interests of students with volunteer experiences that make a genuine difference in the lives of the people with which they work Hobby Shops .
Having access to so many volunteers is one thing, but the VCH goes a step further by quizzing each student before and after they volunteer.”We get student feedback — we find out if they enjoyed it, if they were happy with the kind of work they did, if they were satisfied with the time it required of them — this gives us better information to make sure future volunteers can find the best fit,” said Domenico. “We also find out what the student’s interests are beforehand and try to pair them up with a program they will be motivated to stick with. Usually this involves finding out their career goals, hobbies, and personal interests.”
“Volunteering in food shelters, activism with equal rights movements, ending sexual violence — anything that anyone has a personal desire to make a difference in Hobby Shops — this is the place to go to,” he said.
Grafa also told the Colorado Daily that the organization provides a great social network in the way of connecting with like-minded individuals.
“Some of the coolest people I’ve met have been people who want to make a difference and see positive change,” he said. “It’s just the right attitude to have, and it’s nice to have a place where they can congregate and make it happen.”
