‘A natural transition’

Reason for teaching: My little brother was born with Down syndrome, so working with the special-needs population has always been part of my life. It was a natural transition to become an exceptional student education, or ESE, teacher. Greatest moment as a teacher: Having former students come back and visit years after leaving Deltona Middle School just to say hi. Most embarrassing moment: My first year of teaching, I kept receiving the bell schedule in my e-mail. Well, our physical education coach’s name was Mr. Bell, and I didn’t quite understand why they kept e-mailing me his schedule. Now I am well aware what the bell schedule is. Least favorite part of teaching: Having to write a discipline referral on a student. Person you admire most and why: Lady Bird Johnson. She used her lifelong love of the outdoors to become an advocate for our country’s natural resources while serving as first lady. Favorite movie: The Notebook Last book you read: Scribbler of Dreams by Mary E. Pearson Hobbies: Spending time with my husband and kids, shopping and baking. If you weren’t a teacher, what other career would you choose and why? I would become a counselor for troubled teens. I feel that all kids need a special someone to reach in and touch their life. Was there a special teacher that you remember? I have two special teachers. The first was my fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Cooley, at Eagleville Elementary School in Eagleville, Wis. The second was my high-school biology and advanced biology teacher, Mr. Parkinson, at Mosinee High School in Mosinee, Wis. Both teachers conveyed love and respect toward individuals in their classes. Volusia public- and private-school teachers will be profiled throughout the year. E-mail Eileen Marie Simoneau at vteachspot@mac.com or call her at 386-561-7356 or fax 386-851-7918. Include your name, phone number and a reason why you would like to see this teacher profiled. Nancy Munk was nominated by a former student, Chad Ezell. EILEEN MARIE SIMONEAU/SPECIAL TO THE SENTINEL
