Weather or not

April 2nd, 2008, 11:18 pm Hobbies News

Now the television news launches off into weather right away as though telling us that the suns shining in virtually uninhabited places like Kaitaia should mean something.
Like does anyone know anyone who lives in the winterless north and do we care? But suddenly, hearing that widespread drought conditions might mean potatoes are in short supply, I am deeply concerned about the weather, about possible changes in climate about the impact all this might have on us this year, the United Nations Year of the Potato.
If drought conditions here affected potato crops, making for smaller harvests or poorer quality taties, wed feel the loss.
Right now things seem good, autumn a season of mists and mushrooms, Girl Guide biscuits and the harvest of our own spuds.
It is a great feeling tipping out vegetables that grow so easily, as satisfying as gathering up eggs laid by chooks for whom we really do little beyond scattering grain and goodies.
It is the real ease of food production that makes us love spuds and eggs and it is the thought that we could actually survive for quite a while on just those two foods that makes us grateful to have them right at hand as it were. But potatoes are still growing and after the dry spring and summer we are getting some rain. Crops look good. Hopes are high.
As they are for the man in Cornwall phoning a London department store hoping to have a conversation for more than 39 hours, under the impression this will create a world record but frankly we doubt it.
Weve all fallen for %26quot;please hold, caller%26quot; and been trapped by a strange sense of courtesy into hanging round for hours.
No prizes for records set there.
Records and surveys are often suspect. Recent surveys done by recruitment agencies in New Zealand purport to show that half of the workforce in New Zealand is thinking about a new job.
Like, wed guess, half the television viewers are thinking of another channel.
And some, wed suppose, are waiting for another weather report or at least to hear again about climate change.
The sun will set again this evening, an hour later than it will next week.
Thats climate change for you.
