South steals Swifts player Dehn ahead of opening clash

After nine years with the then Sydney Swifts, and two seasons with the Northern Force in New Zealand, Dehn was yesterday named in the Southern Steel lineup.
It was a move the 33-year-old goal attack never saw coming, but it was one she was looking forward to.
%26quot;Im really excited,%26quot; she said, speaking from Sydney yesterday.
%26quot;It was a very hard decision (not to play for the Swifts again) and I was sad ringing my coach and some friends in the team, but I think more than anything its a lifestyle choice. When Id spoken to Robyn (Broughton, Southern Steel coach) we had a good chat about the team dynamics and the support down there and that all appealed to me.%26quot;
Dehn was still based in Sydney and would touch down in Invercargill early next month for the first of the Steels training camps in Invercargill.
She was anticipating travelling to New Zealand for blocks of time, but details were yet to be worked through.
Another aspect that drew Dehn to the Steel was the lure of not having to find part-time work, which she would have had to do had she played for the Swifts.
%26quot;Its just so hard to fit such a big commitment in and work part time,%26quot; she said.
%26quot;(Not having to work means) I can give it 110 percent and do everything thats required of me including the recovery stuff. If I was going to commit I really wanted to do it properly.%26quot;
Dehn comes to the Steel team with 20 Australian test caps and a goal most Southlanders will immediately love: to win.
%26quot;Every team you play for you want to win, so thats the ultimate goal and just one of the stepping stones to do that is being on court and combining well with team members … doing your job well,%26quot; she said.
And come April 7, when the Steel starts its season in Sydney against the New South Wales Swifts, thats exactly what shes hoping to do.
%26quot;Im sure it will be an interesting matchup and being in Sydney therell be a lot of hype around it … it will be good,%26quot; she said.
