In my work, I frequently find myself in a position of interviewing seniors about their daily lives and what interests and hobbies they have. Many times I am disappointed to hear: “I have no hobbies or any special interests or activities; mostly I just watch TV.”
For those whose lives have become empty due to lack of special interests, activities or hobbies, gardening — one of the most popular of all seasonal activities for older adults — Hobbies News is an enjoyable way to engage the mind and the senses, with limited stress on the body. Gardening connects us in a unique way to the changes of season, and for many people can lead to more time spent outdoors and an increased sense of well-being. A huge variety of resources, from “how-to” books to telephone hotlines, are available to either the new or experienced gardener. But here are some thoughts for getting started.
If you’re new to gardening, get a feeling for what’s out there. Visit a garden center, a botanical garden or greenhouse, or find a friend or neighbor with an indoor or outdoor garden to show you. Gardeners usually love to show off their plants and “talk shop.”
Few hobbies have as many mental and physical benefits as gardening, while potentially being easy, inexpensive, and as flexible as the gardener’s own needs.
