With the jumping of ship of his entire team at the end of last season, he was left without people to alternately pick on and bounce medical ideas off.
That didnt last long, especially after he stuck a white coat on a janitor and made him talk to patients, so a new team had to be found.
However, as this is House, TV3 8.30pm, Tuesdays, nothing goes quite as it should.
Instead of just hiring a crew of new associates, House initiates a Survivor-style competition between doctors vying for a spot on his team.
Slowly but surely the numbers were whittled down until, on Tuesday night, we were left with the final four, competing for two spots.
For House, the competition hasnt been so much about getting the best doctors on his team, as it has been about finding out what makes people tick.
And having a whole lecture-hall of people to play with means that House is really in his element.
I mused on Tuesday night that it really wouldnt have mattered what kind of a job House had, as long as it involved puzzles of some kind.
With diagnostics, he gets the best of both worlds: medical mysteries, and the observation of normal and abnormal human behaviour.
In order to whittle the numbers down from four to two, House invades the hospitals emergency room, and makes off with a drug-addicted punk rocker, who may or may not be deathly ill.
It turned out he had measles.
Not exactly exotic, but with a whole lot of illegal substances giving it meaning, the measles had mutated.
Its actually been interesting and fun this season watching House interact with new people.
It was time, I think, for a break from his regular team, two of whom still work in the hospital, and one who tried to make a break for freedom but ended up right back where he started %26mdash; as Houses conscience.
The new doctors seem to be having just about as much trouble with House, as they second-guess his motives and reasoning behind who he hires and fires.
I was disappointed, I have to say, when the one he called Big Love was fired.
It took me ages to work out that House %26mdash; despite picking on him all the time for being a Mormon %26mdash; was actually disappointed when he compromised on his principles.
House is a complicated man, and no one understands him but his Wilson, his one and only friend who he also treats like a clever lab rat.
Thered be something for Freud in that, I think.
