Ah … fun.
This all leads me, although not very elegantly I have to admit, to The Singing Bee, TV2 Tuesdays at 7.30pm Because The Singing Bee is fun.
Lots of fun.
And yes, Ive heard that the similarly themed Dont Forget the Lyrics on Prime is better, but I havent seen that one, so Im working with what I have.
And what I have, for one hour a week, as the contestants are put through their paces, is fun.
Theres just not enough of it around these days.
The premise is simple %26mdash; five contestants line up and they have to fill in the blanks of popular songs.
The more blanks they fill in correctly, the further they advance, until theres only one winner standing, ready to be crowned the Singing Bee champion.
It reminds me a little bit of Face the Music, the Simon Barnett-hosted game show from the early 1990s.
It had a similar, fun premise, although the prize was a lot smaller in those days. Then, you just won a stereo and bragging rights.
Now, you can win money, and I guess the bragging rights come along for the ride.
There are, I have to admit, certain aspects of the show that can be a bit annoying. The … is it Honeybees? The dancers, anyway, who throw themselves around the stage in their short little dresses, like manic marionettes who have just had their strings cut.
But thats really my only gripe.
The host is amiable, and does his best to ratchet up what little tension there is on The Singing Bee and a couple of the shows singers are familiar faces.
Its a nice, cosy way to spend an hour.
Definitely a break from reality and of course, songs have a very nostalgic effect.
On Tuesday night, for example, one of the songs up for play during the show was Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? by Culture Club and that pushed me right down memory lane as I remembered how bemused my Nana was that I had photos of a man in makeup on my bedroom wall.
It was fun to remember that.
Try it. I promise it wont hurt you.
