The Stags lock-cum-blindside flanker has missed the opening two rounds of the Super 14 with a finger injury he picked up during a training session two weeks before the season started.
MacDonald has had his fair share of injury problems during his career but he admits his most recent has been hard to take with it being such a small injury.
%26quot;The boys actually said I should chop the end of my finger off but I thought about it for a few seconds and thought, nah, I dont think that would be that good of an idea.%26quot; MacDonald was unsure just what Moore had in mind regarding a return to the field but its likely he will be eased back into the fold via the bench against the Waratahs at Carisbrook on Saturday night.
MacDonald would add some experience to the youthful Highlanders outfit if he was to start but his limited game time recently is likely to see him introduced later in the game at either lock or on the blindside flank.
He played just 25 minutes in the Highlanders pre-season campaign before he was ruled out with injury and MacDonald admitted when he spoke to The Southland Times before training yesterday he was a little nervous about his return because of that limited game time.
%26quot;Im pretty confident Ill be able to play but I dont know for how long. Those new rules, Ive been watching it on telly and kind of getting a bit nervous about getting back into it. It does look really fast with the new rules.%26quot; While he has been frustrated having to watch the Highlanders opening two games in Australia from back in New Zealand, he is trying to treat making a late start to the Super 14 as a positive.
%26quot;Last year I pretty much played right through the Super 14 and by the last few rounds I was shattered mentally and physically. But at the moment Im feeling pretty fresh and am just keen to get back into it, so I guess having those two weeks off might not be too bad of a thing.%26quot; The Highlanders team will be named tomorrow and will include one forced change. First five-eighth Daniel Bowden was suspended for one week for a dangerous tackle in the Highlanders 22-20 loss to the Brumbies in Canberra on Saturday night.
Mike Delany is expected to step into the vacant spot.
