The success of the event in November has prompted cycling officials to promote the idea of coming back to Invercargill even though Australia is scheduled to host the event next.
Oceania general-secretary Graham Sycamore, of Invercargill, said there was a reluctance in Sydney and Melbourne to run the championships because of financial issues.
Cycling Southland recorded a small surplus from the event and is keen to run it again, although it would rather have the event the following year in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games.
Oceania president and vice-president of the UCI, the sports governing body, told The Southland Times last year that Invercargill had put on the best event in the 35-year history of the championships.
