Flutey gems recreated in takeaway shop

March 26th, 2008, 9:48 pm Hobbies News

About eight months ago Bluff man Bob Hartsuiker began to turn his takeaway shop The Galley into a tribute to the couple and their collection.
The house was sold last year and its paua shells removed by the Fluteys grandson, Ross Bowen who then gave them to the Canterbury Museum on a 10-year loan.
Some members of the community, including Mr Hartsuiker, were upset the collection would not remain in Bluff.
Mr Hartsuiker said he thought Fred and Myrtle were %26quot;amazing%26quot; people and he decided to start a tribute in their memory.
His own collection, which started with four shells had now grown to more than 100 and would keep some of Bluffs history in Bluff, he said.
As well as a memorial plaque and photos of Fred, Myrtle, and their house, Mr Hartsuiker had also hung newspaper articles about them on the shop walls.
However, the most precious items in the collection were two shells from the Fluteys house.
%26quot;Theyre my pride and joy,%26quot; he said.
Mr Hartsuiker said he had spent more than he should have buying shells and some had been donated or purchased with donations. He hoped to add more and said he wanted to %26quot;fill up the whole shop%26quot;.
