Farm Girl Having Trouble Fitting In At City School

May 20th, 2008, 12:56 am Hobbies News

Hi Jewel: I’m a farm girl who loves the country, animals and country music. Needless to say, I don’t fit in too well at my city high school. Others tell me country music is corny and I should get a life. I think I have a pretty good life. I need some good comeback lines. Do you have any?

Dear C.G.: Without a doubt, moving comes with adjustments. However, this transition can be full of pleasant discoveries, too. Think: Blending of old interests with new turf activities.

Your first priority is to become comfortable in your own skin. This includes not only being proud of your hobbies, but nurturing them. After all, they are uniquely yours.

You’ll also benefit loads by interacting with like-minded people. You can hook-up with country music fans in a dance class. Work soil with fellow green thumbs. Or meet critter lovers at a city animal shelter.

These new activities and uplifting folks will help make you feel empowered. In turn, it won’t matter if a few ignorant people label country music as “corny.” You’ll come to see it as their opinion — not yours or the huge industry that supports such musical talent.

My advice: Don’t consume yourself with the idea of coming up with snappy comeback lines.

Hi Dave: I really like this girl but she is going out with someone who is totally wrong for her. I know the guy and he’s a real jerk. How can I get her to see this guy for what he really is? I talk to her quite a bit but I have never mentioned her boyfriend.

Dear FRUSTRATED: Sometimes, the people we think are jerks actually turn out to be nice people. She might see something in her boyfriend that you don’t see, a side of him that only comes out when he’s intimate with his partner. Stranger things have happened.

Sounds like you want to be a home wrecker. Not cool, man. If this girl loves her boyfriend and wants to keep dating him, who are you to get nosy? Just because you like her as well? You come across as selfish and whiny, and I recommend you look elsewhere. No point going gaga over someone in a relationship. You’ll only feel more frustrated than before.

If the girl of your dreams is dating a jerk, she’ll break up with him if she has any smarts on her shoulders. And if she doesn’t break up with this guy you think is “wrong for her,” maybe that’s not the kind of girl you want: indecisive, blind to the truth, happy to enjoy the comfort of routine.
