Dads Seek Work-Life Balance

As Father’s Day approaches, a new online poll indicates that many Canadian dads feel that work is keeping them from living up to family commitments.

Some of the stress likely comes from working dads wanting to play a more active role in their children’s lives than their dads played in theirs.

“Your kids grow up fast,” Stewart says. “They want to see you and play with you. If you’ve had a hard day, sometimes it’s tough to do. But it’s important.”

A Calgary father of two young boys who did not want to be named for fear of alienating his boss and his family says that dads like him who travel for work have it especially tough. Whenever he’s away from home, he feels guilty for the extra strain put on his wife.

“I have no social life and no hobbies,” said the 30-something dad. “I used to have a lot of hobbies. It’s hard, but it’s a sacrifice I want to make.”

About 11 per cent of respondents to Workopolis’s poll said their biggest obstacle to family life is not being able to turn off work at the end of the day. “They’re bringing work home,” Young says, “Or they just can’t shut down mentally.”
