Variety of productions present theme of love

This week’s stage openings include a fanciful interpretation of Shakespeare’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream” among other productions with the theme of love.

%26#8226; “GEORGE WASHINGTON SLEPT HERE” is a George Kaufman and Moss Hart comedy. It tells the story of New York couple who move into a Pennsylvania farmhouse. George Washington may have slept there, but the accommodations are less than presidential. The production, directed by Jake Suazo, is presented by the Springville Playhouse, 50 S. Main, Springville. It runs from Feb. 15 to March 8, Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults; $7 for seniors and students; with family passes available. %26#8226; HUNT MYSTERIES DINNER THEATER has five comedy performances scheduled for Valentine’s Day and the following weekend.

“Walking the Red Carpet: An Oscar Winning Confession” is a mystery about Hollywood’s brightest and not-so-bright stars. It plays Thursday at Embassy Suites, 110 W. 600 South; Friday at Boccia’s D’Italia in Ogden; and Saturday at Inn on the Creek in Midway.

Meanwhile, “Godfather of the Bride” will play Friday at Inn on the Creek and Saturday at Boccia’s D’Italia. %26#8226; “LOVE, JANIS” the rock-and-roll musical, plays for one night only, next Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at The Eccles Center for the Performing Arts in Park City. Katrina Chester, Mary Bridget Davies and Marisa Ryan take turns portraying the singer. Joplin’s story is told through her own words, recorded in interviews and letters. It features many of her songs, including “Piece of My Heart,” “Get it While You Can,” “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Ball and Chain” and “Mercedes Benz.”

Randal Myler adapted the script from the biography by Laura Joplin. Myler also directs.

%26#8226; “PLAYHOUSE DISNEY LIVE” comes to the Energy Solutions Arena today for two performances only, at noon and 3 p.m. The interactive children’s show highlights favorite characters such as Pooh, Tigger and Mickey Mouse. %26#8226; “PIRATES OF PENZANCE” the classic Gilbert and Sullivan musical tells the story of a wealthy orphan who is finishing up his apprenticeship with the pirates. The production runs Friday through March 24; Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays at 7:30 p.m. at the Valley Center Playhouse, 780 N. 200 East in Lindon.

%26#8226; THE MUSICAL, “SHE LOVES ME” starts Thursday and runs through April 5 at the Hale Center Theater in Orem. The play became the basis for the Jimmy Stewart film, “The Shop Around the Corner”; the Judy Garland and Van Johnson musical, “In the Good Old Summertime”; as well as the more recent “You’ve Got Mail,” starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Set in the 1930s, it tells the story of two lonely shop clerks, Georg and Amalia, who don’t much like each other but who both belong to a lonely hearts club and eagerly await the letters from their anonymous pen pals.

The production features live music and is directed by Dave Tinney with Kathryn Laycock Little as music director. Performances are nightly, except Sundays, at 7:30 p.m. Several Saturday matinees are scheduled at 3:30 p.m. The theater will be dark Feb. 19, 20, 26 and 27.
