Even though itâ€s been 50 years since they walked the halls of the Southern Fulton School District, members of the graduating Class of 1958 are still taking steps to give back to the community and their alma mater while also paying homage to former classmates.
Overseen by the class Reunion Committee, their most recent endeavor includes donating a book to the Southern Fulton High School library in memory of each classmate who has passed away. Since 1968, the class has given a total of 11 books, according to committee member Bob Swadley.
The decision to purchase specific books, Swadley and fellow graduate Helen Layton stated, is based on each individuals’ vocation, hobbies or interests. The most recent example of such a decision was a sign language book donated to the library on Wednesday, April 30, in honor of the late Sheila (Barnhart) Mellott, who had an avid interest in having sign language universally celebrated and accepted.
Even though their class graduated a total of 60 members, Layton indicated they have begun honoring other students who were in their class but may not have graduated in time due to various reasons. A?total of 14 individuals have passed away, she added, and over half were actual graduates.
Among those graduates recognized were Robert Barnhart, Helen Jane (Truax) Souders, Alvin Brant, Maryann (DeSantis) Zillanko, Barbara (Layton) Manning, Daniel Swain and Eugene Truax. In addition, Carl Furman, Roger Wilt, Carl Mann, Lester Landers, Sheila (Barnhart) Mellott, Sylvester Golden and?Ronald Hixon have also been recognized as classmates.
Swadley said the idea for donating books was initiated during class reunions as a way to offer something back to the community and retain an interest in their school.
“The book on sign language that was donated was checked out the first day I?displayed it,â€?stated Southern Fulton High School librarian Angela Adams. “Any time new books are donated I?put them in the display case for all to see, and they may be checked out immediately.â€
Adams lauded the efforts of the Class of 1958, and further stated she is also available to pick out books to tailor to a person’s budget and desired subject area. Customized book inserts can be designed to meet strict specifications, said Adams, unless the donator wishes to remain anonymous.
“It is a great way to leave a lasting memory or to honor a person, organization or a pet and it will help people in the future. Students and teachers know that I am always open to suggestions regarding book titles and topics to order and any donated books will help stretch the budget to try and fulfill their needs,†concluded Adams.
