Often when a person reaches the retirement, they experience boredom and problems filling the new time they have on their hands. This can lead to depression and a sense of lack of worth. Retirement does not mean sitting around and waiting for the end, but rather it is a phase in life where a person can get out and enjoy rewarding activities that maybe they did not have the time to do while they were part of a work force and taking care of children. Retirement does not mean a person stops living life, and in fact, it is the phase where they can actually grab hold of life and begin experiencing it even more. Hobbies can be anything from a physical activity to collecting antiquities to learning something new. A good way to fill time during retirement is by incorporating and creating hobbies.
Even if you have organized your retirement to include travel, hikes, golf, bowls, book clubs and grandchildren, after the initial flush of free time fades, you might find that there are periods when you need a little more mental stimulation. While indulging in your hobbies, with probably a lot more gusto that you previously had time for, you might consider the possibility of actually earning some money from them. Now, I don’t mean selling your wares, but of course if they are easily posted ebay can be a great marketplace for you.
What I am referring to you is selling you knowledge. Whether it is sports, crafts, cookery or photography, you could use your retirement to join thousands of others who are making a profit out of their skills. The secret to making money from what I’ll call your collective “hobbies” is to approach the project as a labor of love. Love of your hobby. If you can remember back to the days when you first started your hobby, you were keen to gather as much information as you could about how to master it. Learning about the different methods, patterns, tools etc that could be used was a great adventure. You may still be on the journey!
How to Understand the Benefits of a Hobby after Retirement:
Help keep the mind active. As people age, it is important to find interests and hobbies that help to keep the mind working sharply. Having a hobby can help to stimulate the brain and continue embracing an attitude of growing through lifelong learning.
Continue to make new friends. Incorporating hobbies and interests will allow the retired person to mix and mingle amongst other people with similar interests and hobbies. Being able to socialize can help an aging person feel less isolated and alone, which is something that occurs during the retirement phase of life. So get out there and find people with similar interests and hobbies and make new friends. For those that are single, they just might find a connection with someone new and begin a wonderful companionship.
Having a hobby can help relieve stress. Retirement can bring with it stress about financial security, health and wellness and longevity. Being able to get away from the daily stresses of life by taking part in a rewarding hobby can lift the spirits and help people feel less weighted down by stress. It can also help them approach the stresses of their life more easily because they have more clarity.
Hobbies can create new career opportunities. Whether it is crafts, woodworking or a small facet of your pre-retirement career that has managed to develop into a hobby, it can often be a great opportunity to earn a little extra income to help subsidize any retirement income received. Some people just cannot go into full retirement and not feel like they are able to still earn a wage; try on a new hobby and see if there are any earnings attached to it.
Helps maintain a level of fitness. Depending on what the hobby is, it can help a retired person stay fit and well. It is unfortunate that some people enter retirement and become sedentary, which can lead to health problems. Stay active and stay healthy.
With the aid of the internet, you are able to share your knowledge not just with your grandchild (who may not be interested anyway) but with people around the world who want to know how to master that particular hobby. Who knows? You could be a master at it, without even knowing.
