“Seven Passages” is a compilation of more then
100 interviews with homosexual Christians by Calvin College
theater professor Stephanie Sandberg.
The theatrical equivalent of a film documentary, the play
analyzes the tug-of-war struggle between faith and sexuality
in an entertaining and moving performance.
The play’s intimate and real-life feel are complemented
by York Theatre’s small size and the layout of the
audience.
Uniquely arranged on the four sides of the room, the
audience is able to see each other, with the middle left
bare for the actors to fill.
This ability to see others’ emotions and reactions to
different scenes adds a unique and fresh fourth dimension to
the performance.
Dressed entirely in white, the performers use different
accents to play out real scenes from the hundreds of
interviews, while also following the lives of a select few
through the entire performance.
What’s fascinating about the play is its ability to
speak to everyone in the room no matter who they are or what
their sexual orientation.
