A voice from the chorus still manages to stand out

With only a year of actual voice training eons ago,
45-year-old Lynch is an active grand opera singer.
Since 1996 he’s sung in the chorus of nearly 40
Michigan Opera Theatre productions at the Detroit Opera
House — including the world premieres of
”Margaret Garner” and
”Cyrano” and the very contemporary
”Dead Man Walking.”
”Also, three or four different productions of
‘La Boheme’ and two
‘Carmens,”’ he recalls.
”Those two remain my two favorite
operas.”
Sunday is the final performance of Bellini’s
”La Sonnambula” (”The
Sleepwalker”). ”That one’s a real
challenge because there are large numbers for the chorus and
we’re on all the time.”
And the Midland Symphony Orchestra rehearsals begin for next
weekend’s ”Madama Butterfly”
performances — the third time he’s had a character
role in an opera at the Midland Center for the Arts.
”This one is a really short role. I’m cast
as Uncle Bonzo and come out and scream and holler briefly
and then I disappear,” quips Lynch about the role
in Midland in what is called a semi-staged version of the
opera.
”That means the orchestra is not buried in the
pit but up on stage with the singers,” explains
Lynch, a cousin to Saginaw singer Leo Lynch, ”and
audience imagination is needed for the scenery. But we sing
the entire opera, and we’re in costumes.”
