In those days, the deposit on a bottle of Coke was 2 cents.
We didn’t drink much pop, so those pennies accumulated
very slowly that summer and fall.
But when Christmas came, I had enough to go to
Kleinfelter’s Dime Store a short walk through the alley
from my house.
The memory is so vivid I could draw a floor plan of that
store.
I still know where the sewing stuff was. Where the costume
jewelry was. And where the perfume was.
With my “earnings” I bought my mother a little box
set of Evening in Paris perfume.
It contained two bottles — one just over an inch tall and
the other about two inches. I didn’t have enough money
for a big bottle, or a pretty box of dusting powder, or a
colorful scarf to go with it.
