Tropical Fish Keeping as a Hobby

July 28th, 2008, 11:38 am Hobbies And Interests

As I have kept and bred Tropical Fish for the last 48 years I think I have something to pass on to people about the hobby in general. It pleases me no end to talk about my hobby, but it gives me great satisfaction to visit a friends house or even just visiting someone and observe a Fish Tank given pride of place in the lounge.

A fish tank is in my opinion a far better therapy than any tranquiliser. You just sit and become totally mesmerised by the actions of the fish, as they are always on the move and have their own individual quirks and idiocincracies that make each specie unique. My pleasure in the hobby now is breeding my fish which is both a joy and a challenge; for to be successful at breeding fish you have to be able in some way, to think like a fish.

The photo shows Mother and offspring of (Pterophyllum altum) the “Long Finned Angelfish” which I recently bred. The babies at that stage were seven weeks old and were the first breeding of the parents, which at the time I got them had only been released from quarantine after being caught in the wild in the Ucayali River, a tributary of the mighty Amazon.

Take some time and consider keeping a “Tropical Fish Tank” in your lounge, because whether you are young or old there is no better past time than sitting staring at your fish whilst having a cup of coffee; and think what a talking point you will have with the neighbours.
