When the news broke last week that an off-duty prison guard foiled a robbery at a Jacksons with a six-pack to the head of the perp, the first question that popped into my mind was - what kind?Chances are, if you are reading this, you had the same thought. What brew was sacrificed for the greater good? A sixer of lowfi beer, like Oly? A dull American lager like Bud Light? Or was it something more crafty - something that might be missed? Was it cans or bottles?Enough suspense. With one swing of the arm, six broken bottles of Deschutes’ Mirror Pond Ale, and a short wrestling match later, Dave Dietz stopped a Boise man from walking out of the Jacksons near Curtis Road on Fairview Avenue with hundreds of dollars in cash.Dietz, a 29-year-old corrections officer at the maximum security prison south of Boise, stopped into the Jacksons around 7:30 p.m. Feb. 5 for the sole purpose of buying a sixer of Mirror Pond, or maybe Deschutes’ Jubelale (a thick winter warmer) - two staple beers from the popular Bend, Ore.-based brewery.Dietz was waiting to pay when a man - later identified by police as James E. Bridges - walked into the store, went behind the counter and took some money a clerk was counting. He then tried to walk right by Dietz, which was a mistake. For him. That blow - which broke all the bottles and sprayed brew all over the store - didn’t knock out the robber, but Dietz was able to wrestle him to the ground. At the same time, another customer joined in and helped restrain the robber until police arrived.”I really thought hitting him with that as hard as I could would knock him unconscious,” Dietz said. “I swung the (sixer) as hard as I could.”Bridges, who was arrested and charged with felony robbery, sustained a cut on his head from the bottles but was otherwise OK, police said. After the melee died down, Dietz tried to complete his purchase with a new and intact sixer of Mirror Pond. “I told the gals to ring me up, but they wouldn’t let me pay for it,” Dietz said. Dietz said he didn’t think twice about wasting the beer. “Now, if it was the Jubelale, I might have hesitated,” Dietz laughed. Patrick Orr: 373-6619
