A new festival celebrating the past and present of the Boise Foothills will make its debut on Saturday, April 12, in the Avimor development north of Eagle.The inaugural Foothills Heritage Festival combines activities like sheepherding and Basque dancing with wildlife walks and mountain bike rides. Food, entertainment and children’s activities also are part of the fun.Oh yeah, and the whole thing is free.”There’s not a festival like this that celebrates the Foothills,” festival spokesman Craig Carter said. “It’s a great family event. We hope that this thing takes on a life of its own and grows into a huge community event.”Here’s a look at the highlights.HOT AIR BALLOONSA handful of hot air balloons will participate in a balloon rally at 7 a.m. to kick off the festival.Then from 8 to 10 a.m., tethered hot air balloon rides will be offered.LIVE ENTERTAINMENTBoise roots and blues band Smooth Old-Fashioned High will play at 11 a.m., followed by the Oinkari Basque Dancers at 1 p.m.MOUNTAIN BIKINGProfessional racer Davey Moore will lead mountain bike rides on the new 10-mile Coyote Classic race course at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.Idaho Velodrome and Cycling Park representatives will have information on the grand opening of the new terrain park in Eagle.Trek will be on hand for a clinic and demo of its 2008 bikes from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.NATURE WALKSTake a guided wildlife and bird-watching walk with the folks from Habiscapes, a wildlife restoration group from Pearl. Walks will take place at 8 and 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.SHEEPHERDING DEMONSTRATIONSThe Intermountain Stock Dog Association of Boise will give sheepherding demonstrations at 10 and 11 a.m., noon and 1 and 2 p.m.FOR THE KIDSFace painting, inflatables and activities with the Little Gym will be available for the youngsters throughout the day.FARMERS MARKET AND CRAFTS FAIRThirty vendors that will be familiar to shoppers of the Capital City Public Market and the Eagle Saturday Market will offer their wares during the farmers market and craft fair (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.).FOOD AND DRINKA free barbecue lunch will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.COMMEMORATIVE WARD HOOPER POSTERA commemorative Foothills heritage poster created by local artist Ward Hooper will be available.
