COLUMBIA - The Show-Me Showdown, Missouri’s high school basketball championship, kicked off Friday at Mizzou Arena.
It’s not just the teams that are winning, it’s Columbia business owners as well. The Visitor’s Bureau officals said they expect between $2.5Â and $3 million extra dollars coming in this weekend.
According to the Visitors Bureau, shops take in the most cash, followed by hotels and restaurants. Other big events for the economy are state wrestling championships, as well as the Future Farmers of America conference. Businesses you wouldn’t expect to benefit are making profit too.
“It’s always surprising. Everything from, believe it or not, tire stores, hobby shops, grocery stores,” said Lorah Steiner of the Convention and Visitors Bureau. It’s as diverse as the people that come to our community.”
According to MSHSAA, more than 50,000 people come to watch the competition.
