Let Athletes Pay For Athletic Fields

March 30th, 2008, 12:51 am Hobbies And Interests

When I was a kid, a sport was for fun. Education was the important thing back then. Sports were originally brought into towns and schools for exercise and as extracurricular activities. Not the main event.

These days, all the effort is put into extracurricular activities. The main focus should be in the school system. It would be wiser to better the education of the kids. What is the final result of sports? How may kids who play sports make a living at it after high school? A very small number. We aren’t using our education system to its full advantage. There are so many things we need to address more than expensive sports.

Then, there are those parents who force their kids to do sports because it was the parents’ dream to be a sports star when they were young. There are kids out there who would rather be doing something else.

Nothing is free. How can $8 million be free? If it comes out of my pocket, it’s not free.

Sure, kids could use exercise after school. Kids can just as easily form intermediate teams within their own school. They can play each other. This busing back and forth between schools and school districts costs too much money. During this time of a poor economy, adjustments must be made. Start thinking creatively. Kids don’t care who they play. They just want to have fun. Why make it a financial burden on every taxpayer in town when kids can have just as much fun on teams playing each other.

Adults who want a ball field built can creatively do fund-raisers to obtain land and facilities. Why should all of Rosemount’s taxpayers fund ball fields for the few who want a hobby playing ball for fun? Maybe I and other taxpayers have other ideas of how to have fun. Right now, we pay for our own fun things. Those who belong to YMCAs, fitness clubs, or the like, pay large fees to belong. Those who can’t afford it have less expensive or free hobbies. Should every one of us ask taxpayers to chip in millions of dollars for each of our hobbies? With this sports complex, you’re asking me to pay for an adult field for a few adults I don’t even know, to play ball!

We all need to be responsible taxpayers. We need to be responsible to each other. It is not responsible to expect the majority of the population to foot the bill for somebody else’s fun. There are so many people who are working day and night just to keep bread on their family’s table. I fail to see why the rest of us should pay the bill for a few who merely want to have fun.
