When is writing a story a crime? That’s the question in “The Pillowman,” Martin McDonagh’s play that opens at Boise Contemporary Theater this weekend. It is set in a totalitarian state somewhere. Two police detectives (Richard Klautsch and Arthur Glen Hughes) question a writer (Matthew Cameron Clark) about a series of gruesome child murders that are similar to the plots of his stories. With Kafka-esque touches and darkly ironic humor, McDonagh addresses issues such as artistic freedom, personal responsibility, the use of torture in interrogation, and the prevalence of violence in modern culture. This play contains adult language, violence and potentially disturbing material, and it is not appropriate for children. Dana Oland
