I read with interest your article “Raiding the 401(k) Nest Egg” (Investing in Funds, May 5). Tragically, today’s young people are way too media focused and have no concept about the long term and life expectancy.
Your article references a young lady who at age 34 has shifted her portfolio to 30% in bonds as she said, “I don’t like taking any more risk than I absolutely have to.” What risk? She will most likely work another 20 to 25 years and spend over 30 years in retirement.
She is concerned about risk in 2008? My suggestion: Go back to work, contribute the maximum to your 401(k), stay very heavily invested in stocks and focus on your interests and hobbies, not on the negative media.
